I did not start out in art – I
spent over 20 years in manufacturing, management, consulting, and
the like. These years
were not completely wasted, however: I picked up useful knowledge
such as meeting deadlines, understanding materials and construction,
and quality, among others.
Secretly, also, I began making sculptures of creatures and
suns, while picking up skills from lots of book reading, practice,
and a few outstanding classes (glass fusing and concrete in
Washington State, welding and architectural ceramics
in Florida, and a few others in
between).
No
telling where the fascination for fantasy creatures came from…fueled
perhaps by childhood encounters with Maurice Sendak and fairy
tales. A similar
passion for ceramic tiles followed later, inspired by discovering
Californian Arts and Crafts.
The smart alecky-ness can only be chalked up to
genetics.
Both
areas of passion (creatures and tiles) now benefit by years in
chemicals, bottling, aerospace, medical devices, and other
industries. I am almost
as intrigued by the mechanics and chemistry of glass, metals,
adhesives, and ceramics as I am about creating unique stories and
designs (and in injecting humor wherever possible).
I exhibit my creatures at
the Gibran Studio & Gallery in Deland, Florida, and on this
website. I was chosen to exhibit
in a nationally juried show in Maitland, FL. (My tiles, designed
primarily for exterior use on homes and businesses, will soon be
available directly from the website www.ArcanaTileworks.com.)
Mostly, it is the delight of each adopting Creature
Parent that lights my
fire.
Fall in love, pat a head, guffaw at a story, and strap your
own Rare Creature into the seat beside you when you take him/her
home: nothing is better
than that.
